Johnny Depp returns to cinemas in November this year, starring as Whitey Bulger in Scott Cooper’s Black Mass. Bulger was a notoriously violent Boston criminal who eventually turned FBI informant in order to protect his own turf. It’s the first trailer with Depp in it that actually looks relatively promising. Given his recent run of turkeys, my heart sank when I read about this. But with Cooper in the director’s chair, Black Mass could turn out to be an interesting watch.
Cooper last brought us the Christian Bale/Casey Affleck tour de force, Out of the Furnace. Black Mass boasts a similarly impressive cast, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Joel Edgerton and Peter Sarsgaard. Bulger was the brother of a senator yet ended up embroiled in murder, drug dealing, racketeering before eventually making it on to the FBI’s top ten Most Wanted List.
This could see Depp return to his previous flair for darkened criminals. With a solid script and cast behind him, here’s hoping this puts an end to his run of terrible films.
Black Mass hits cinemas November 13th, 2015.
