BAFTA 2019 Award Nominees Announced

BlacKkKlansmanJust announced is the full nominee list for the 2019 BAFTAs. Leading the pack is Yorgos Lanthimos’s latest The Favourite with twelve nominations. These nods confirm the speculation that the Olivia Coleman led film is indeed a serious contender for major movie awards both here and at the forthcoming Oscars. Colman gets a nomination in the best actress category with Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone both getting mentions in the supporting actress category. The Favourite is also up for best film, best director, outstanding British film and six technical categories.

Not too far behind with seven nominations is Damien Chazelle’s First Man, Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut A Star Is Born, Alfonso Cuaron’s critically acclaimed Netflix movie Roma and the Queen musical biography Bohemian Rhapsody.

Other notable nominees are the political drama Vice which is still to hit the UK cinema circuit. It gets six nominations including Christina Bale in the best actor category for his prosthetics heavy portrayal of Dick Cheney. BlacKkKlansman, Spike Lee’s return to form, gets an impressive five nominations.

Elsewhere, the Pawel Pawlikowski’s monochrome romance Cold War is recognised in four categories. The film was a real favourite with movie writers, many of whom placed it as their number one film in their end of year lists. Green Book, set for general release at the end of the month gets four nominations while it is worthwhile noting that the fantastic Lynne Ramsay thriller You Were Never Really Here is one of the films in the outstanding British film category. The hitman drama starring Joaquin Phoenix was one of the highlights last year.

The winners will be announced on 10 February.
