This Week’s Cinema Releases – 30th August 2019

With a gap between the opening of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and It: Chapter Two, this week sees a variety of new films vying for your time and money. The fact that they picked this fallow week to launch may be an indication of their quality and expected returns from audiences that have been exposed to some of the biggest films in recent years.

A Million Little Pieces
Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as James, a twenty three year old alcoholic and drug addict. After waking up on a plane with a broken face and no memory of the previous weeks he is faced with a choice. Get treatment or die. He goes into rehab where more than just detox and therapy are opened up for him. As he slowly begins to recuperate he finds he is mending his soul as well as his body. The film marks the returning team up of husband and wife Aaron and Sam Taylor-Johnson, a decade after their collaboration in Control, the Ian Curtis biography. The film also stars Charlie Hunnam, Billy Bob Thornton, Juliette Lewis and Giovanni Ribisi.

 

Asterix : The Secret of the Magic Potion
On the sixtieth anniversary of the comic book series an new animated adventure is released. Following a fall during mistletoe picking, Druid Panoramix decides that it is time to secure the future of the village. Accompanied by Astérix and Obelix, he undertakes to travel the Gallic world in search of a talented young druid to transmit the Secret of the Magic Potion. On their quest they come face to face with Sulfurix, an evil wizard, who is intenet on stealing the recipe for the potion. The film is voiced by Christian Clavier, Guillaume Briat, Alex Lutz and Alexandre Astier.

The Informer
former Special Ops soldier Pete Koslow finds his world turned upside down when he finds himself in prison after a fight where he was defending his wife. He is approached by the FBI and offered a deal where he becomes an informant as he goes undercover in New York to take down a powerful crime boss. Things do not go as planned for Koslow and he finds himself tapped between the FBI and the crime syndicate which may place him back in the very place he is trying to get released from. The film stars Joel Kinneman in the lead role and support comes in the form of Rosumund Pike, Clive Owen and Ana De Armas.

The Mustang
Roman, a convict in a rural Nevada prison participates in a rehab program that sees inmates train wild mustangs . He has a hard time relating to both the horses and his fellow inmates but as he starts to work along side a young inmate and the old horse trainer he starts to come to terms with his life and the problems he has buried deep for so long. The film stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Bruce Dern and Jason Mitchell.
